Police are appealing for information from the public after an armed robbery near Shepparton in north-east Victoria.

A man wearing a balaclava and wielding a large knife held up a 24-hour service station on the Midland Highway at Byrneside, south-west of Shepparton, about 4:30am (AEDT) today.

Police said he forced two attendants to hand over some cash and then he drove off in a silver Holden sedan without numberplates.

The attendants were not injured in the robbery.

Police want to speak to anyone who saw the car before the hold-up.
