A bungling bandit has been arrested after being outwitted by a service station attendant in suburban Melbourne.

Police say the man was armed with a hammer and a knife when he entered the service station on Plenty Road, Bundoora, and demanded cash just before 3am on Monday.

The attendant convinced him to go outside where he would get him cash from an ATM, then locked the doors and called police.

Officers found the man still standing outside when they arrived.

A 22-year-old Bundoora man is being questioned.
