The definition of shift work has been changed recently, resulting in changes to the industry Modern Awards and the annual leave entitlements for some shift workers.

As part of the Modern Award Review questions were raised as to the differing definitions of shift work.  Some Awards included definitions that were found to be inconsistent with the definitions in the National Employment Standards.  As a result several Awards have been modified to include new definitions of shiftwork, and the entitlement for an additional week annual leave for shiftworks.  Included in the updated Awards is the industry Awards; Road Transport and Distribution Award 2010 and Vehicle Manufacturing, Repair, Service and Retail Award 2010.

The changes to the RTD Award have resulted in an additional week annual leave to be provided for defined shift workers.  A defined shift worker is, as per 29.1.b “a seven day shift worker who is regularly rostered to work on Sundays and public holidays.”

The changes to the VMRSR Award have resulted in an additional week annual leave to be provided for defined shiftworkers.  A defined shift worker is, as per 29.5 “a seven day shift worker who is regularly rostered to work on Sundays and public holidays.”
