A fuel tanker driver died when his truck rolled near Pittsworth, about 45 kilometres south-west of Toowoomba early Tuesday.

The 62-year-old from Goondiwindi was the sole occupant of the truck when it left the Gore Highway and rolled about 4.25am.

Paramedics were called but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Queensland Police Service said in a statement the Gore Highway remained closed to traffic in both directions.

Detours are in place and expected to remain for several hours as the Forensic Crash Unit investigates.

Emergency services are also working to clean-up a diesel spill that resulted from the crash.
