A MAN sought over nine petrol thefts, dating back more than a year, has been arrested.

Police stopped a Ford Explorer at Elizabeth North, just after 1am on Tuesday, and were defecting the car when they found a spare set of numberplates inside.

A check of the plates revealed they had been used in nine petrol drive-offs at the same Smithfield service station between June 2014 and April this year.

It will be alleged the value of the petrol stolen was more than $700.

An Elizabeth Vale man, 33, was arrested and charged with nine counts of making off without payment.

Further inquiries revealed the man was allegedly disqualified from driving while committing most of the petrol offences.

He was further charged with seven counts of driving while disqualified and two counts of driving unlicensed.

The man was bailed to appear in the Elizabeth Magistrates Court in November, when police will be applying for compensation on behalf of the petrol station.
