There were dramatic scenes at a Hobart service station which caught fire last night, closing streets on the city’s eastern shore.

Emergency services were called to the United petrol station on Clarence Street in Howrah about 8:20pm.

The petrol station was not open at the time but the Fire Service said the blaze started in an office at the rear of the premises.

When crews arrived flames were seen shooting from a skylight.

Police closed several nearby streets to traffic but there were no evacuations of nearby residents.

Nearby resident, Betty, said she witnessed the blaze.

“[I saw] quite a lot of flame flying quite high in the air. Very red,” she said.

“And then a little bit later when I had another look, a lot of smoke.

“The flame went for quite some time.”

A fire watch was being kept on the site overnight.

The cause of the fire is yet to be determined.
