LAST night the Coles Express service station on Toolooa St shut its doors for the last time but some motorists this morning must not have gotten the memo.

In a short time the Observer spotted two cars indicate to turn in only to realise at the last second the servo was closed.

Things got a little hectic as the cars attempted to merge back in to the flowing traffic.

The Coles Express signage was being removed and the driveways were taped off.

Tradies and a hire removalist truck were on site.

Benny Benedetto – who owns the site – said he plans to open a new service station on the existing site once Coles Express vacates the premises.

He said the new service station will be open “no later than Christmas”.

Mr Benedetto – who has lived in Gladstone for 40 years – said that all of the former employees would be welcome to re-apply for positions once his doors open.

A spokesperson for Coles Express said the company was looking to secure a site in Gladstone to open another store.
