Cheap petrol has been blamed for Melbourne train patronage staying flat, growing just 0.6 per cent in 2014-15.

Metropolitan trains carried more than 227 million passengers in the past financial year, Public Transport Victoria’s annual report shows.

Patronage grew just 0.6 per cent despite the city’s strong population growth, as petrol prices hit a six-year low in January.
