Major Crash officers are investigating a bizarre crash in Kardinya on Monday that resulted in the death of a 63-year-old woman.

WA Police spokesman Adam Brouwer said 2.45pm, an elderly man and his female passenger were leaving Kardinya Park shopping centre, turning left on North Lake Road near the Coles Express petrol station, when their Hyundai Getz stopped unexpectedly.

The woman got out of the passenger seat to speak to the drivers waiting behind them when the Getz started moving again, turned sharply right onto the footpath between a bollard and a power pole and then rolled down the embankment into a petrol station, where it hit the back of a Volkswagen Jetta.

But rather than stopping it continued to turn, hitting the woman who had got out, rolling back up the embankment, then finally back down, coming to rest in the forecourt of the petrol station.

The woman, a 63-year-old from Coolbellup, died as a result of her injuries.

The driver, a 73-year-old from Coolbellup, is in hospital for treatment.

Anyone who saw the crash should call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 FREE.
