Two robbers used a steal bar to smash their way into a petrol station in Darwin before stealing several packets of cigarettes.

Detectives said the men went into the United Petrol Station on Bagot Road in Coconut Grove just after 2:00am and demanded cash from the attendant.

CCTV footage of the robbery showed the pair initially trying to get behind the counter through a side door, which they smashed with the steel bar.

“Fortunately the console operator saw them and locked himself in a back room,” Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Mark Bland said.

“The males then approached the counter of the service station, one jumped the counter, forced open the cigarette cupboard before they stole approximately 15 packets of cigarettes and then they left the area.”

No-one was injured in the robbery.

“One of the males was brandishing an iron bar and the other came in with a bag, they both had their faces covered with what appeared to be handkerchiefs,” Detective Bland said.

“One of the offenders did drop a hat so that’s gone in for DNA testing,” he said.

The manager at the petrol station, who did not want to be identified due to safety fears, said he was happy the worker made the decision to lock himself in the back room.

“He was worried and scared but he did the right thing,” he said.

“We aren’t used to this … it doesn’t happen frequently, but it does happen.”

Police arrived at the station shortly after the robbery and used sniffer dogs to track the men who were spotted fleeing on foot across the nearby golf course.

However, the men evaded capture, Detective Bland said.

Police described one of the men as about 183cm tall with an athletic build and a Caucasian appearance.

The other man was described as about 180cm tall and of slim build and of Indigenous appearance.

Police urged anyone with information to contact police.
