A husband forgot his wife at a petrol station in Brazil and only realised after he drove 100km away, according to Brazilian media reports.

The husband was driving home to Argentina after a holiday in Brazil and stopped at a petrol station in Passo Fundo, in the north of the state of Rio Grande do Sul.

After the toilet stop he didn’t notice his 40-year-old wife was still missing before he drove off, Globo reports.

According to Brazil’s Federal Highway Police, the woman was sleeping in the backseat of the car when they arrived at the petrol station so her husband though she was still there.

Their 14-year-old son, who was also inside the car, failed to notice that his mother was missing since he was sitting at the front playing on his mobile phone.

The wife attempted to call her husband but could not reach him due to bad reception in the area.

Employees at the petrol station helped her get in touch with local police where she was looked after until her husband returned.

A traffic officer said she was unimpressed when her husband returned two hours later.
