A NSW man believed to have been under the influence of drugs and alcohol has allegedly stolen petrol and crashed into two cars, including a police patrol vehicle, at Wasleys in South Australia’s Mid North.

SA Police arrested the 32-year-old from Dareton early on Sunday morning after he was reported to be driving erratically.

Police alleged the man stole petrol from a service station at Bolivar earlier in the night.

Patrols pulled the driver over on Annie Terrace and as officers approached the car, the driver “drove off and deliberately collided with the front of the patrol car and then collided with a red Commodore sedan being driven by a member of the public”, a statement said.

The driver made his way into back streets, crashed into a fence on Jane Terrace and fled the scene.

He was found by police a short time later.

“The 32-year-old from New South Wales was taken to hospital due to effects of alcohol and drugs,” the statement said.

Charges against the man relate to theft and driving as well as carrying an offensive weapon, after an axe was found in the back seat of the car.

He was refused bail and will appear in the Elizabeth Magistrates Court on Monday.

No-one was injured in the incident, but damage to the police car and the red Commodore was estimated to be about $5,000.
