A POLICE officer has escaped injury after the petrol tank of his patrol car caught fire while he was filling it at a service station.

At 1am this morning, an officer was at a service station on Military Rd, Largs Bay, when he saw flames coming from the nozzle of the petrol hose and his petrol tank.

He grabbed a nearby fire extinguisher and sprayed the area to extinguish the flames.

The officer was not injured.

There was no visible damage to the outside of the patrol car, which was towed from the scene.

It will be inspected.

MFS crews attended to ensure the area was safe.

The pump was cordoned off, to be inspected by SafeworkSA.
