Shocking footage has emerged of an elderly man being physically and verbally assaulted at a Melbourne petrol station after he drove the wrong way to the bowsers, angering another motorist.

The 65-year-old man had entered the Caltex station on Ascot Vale Road, in Moonee Ponds, the wrong way as he feared his car was low on petrol and might break down.

However, a man in a four-wheel-drive refused to move out of the way, and began abusing the elderly motorist.

Security cameras inside the station show the offender abusing the Essendon grandfather, before pushing and shoving him to the ground.

Victoria Police said no witnesses reported the attack and that the victim’s life had changed substantially since the assault.

“His friends and family say he’s just not the same person he was, unfortunately,” Constable Breannah Jones told 9NEWS.

“He’s too scared to leave the house.”

Anyone with information about the attack, which occurred on February 15, is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 FREE.
