A MASKED bandit smashed his way into a suburban service station in an early morning attempted burglary in Melbourne’s northeast, but left empty-handed.

The offender, wearing a mask likened to a character from the movie V for Vendetta, broke a window to gain entry to the Heidelberg Heights outlet on April 24 just before 3am.

He attempted to force entry to an ATM but was unsuccessful and left the store without any loot.

Banyule Crime Investigation Unit detectives today released CCTV of a man they believe can assist with their inquiries.

The footage shows the man jumping the Upper Heidelberg Rd store’s counter with what appears to be a crowbar.

Anyone with any information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers via 1800 333 000 or crimestoppersvic.com.au.
