A service station worker hit in the head with a machete during a robbery at Queanbeyan has escaped serious injury.

Two men armed with the machete and a metal pole took cash, cigarettes and two mobile phones from the store during the hold-up in the early hours of Saturday morning.

A police manhunt failed to find the suspects.
