A man armed with a knife attempted to rob a service station in Kaleen, but he got away empty handed after being thwarted by a locked door.

ACT Policing said the man tried to gain access to the Caltex Star Mart Service station on Maribyrnong Avenue about 10pm Thursday night.

He ran towards the front sliding door, but it was locked and an alarm sounded.

Another man was waiting behind the wheel of a 1993 Nissan Skyline parked out the front and the pair fled.

Police later discovered the car was reported stolen and had been painted from purple to white.

The offender is described as about 170cm tall with a solid build. He was wearing a black jumper, black balaclava, navy with white striped shorts and white runners.

Police are also looking for another male described as slim in build and aboriginal appearance wearing tan pants and black hoodie.
