AN armed robbery suspect has been arrested after being locked inside a Mayfield West service station as he attempted to hold it up.

The man, 56, has been charged with attempted armed robbery after his alleged attempt at stealing cash went awry on Wednesday night.

Police allege the man entered the 7-Eleven service station about 10.30pm and asked for some cigarettes.

But when the console operator placed them on the counter, the suspect is alleged to have pulled a knife and demanded cash.

The operator instead locked the business down and retreated to a safe room.

Police arrived soon later and arrested the man still inside the locked shop.

He was refused bail to appear in Newcastle Local Court on Thursday.

There are not believed to be any links between the robbery and similar hold-ups across Newcastle in the past month.
