Police were forced to subdue a drunken man with capsicum spray after he allegedly threatened to set himself on fire at a Geelong service station.

Officers said the man, aged in his 30s, allegedly attempted to pour petrol on himself before resisting arrest at the Woolworths petrol station on Shannon Avenue, Manifold Heights, about 11pm Tuesday.

Sergeant Graeme Arnold said the man was eventually arrested and lodged in the cells for being drunk in a public place.

He’s since been charged with a raft of offences, including assault, and bailed to appear in court in July.
