FIRE crews have isolated a gas leak at a Grovedale petrol station.

Officers were called to the Woolworths/Caltex service station on Pioneer Rd at the Waurn Ponds Shopping Centre, about 9.20am Thursday.

It is understood the leak came from an LPG tank underground.

Police quickly closed the entrance to the shopping complex near the service station, while crews worked on the affected area.

It is the region’s second service station gas leak in less than a week, after the Leopold BP was closed for hours on Sunday when a CFA volunteer caught a smell of gas and raised the alarm.

The Leopold CFA captain called it a “significant” leak, which was identified within the underground pump mechanism, which runs from a 30,000L storage tank to the LPG bowsers.

On Tuesday, up to 40 students were evacuated from Ceres Primary School after a suspected gas leak, but it turned out to be a false alarm.

Police and paramedics were temporarily placed on standby while CFA officers investigated the incident.
