The white knight petrol stations that refuse to gouge Melburnians have been revealed.

Sunday Herald Sun analysis reveals there were 20 service stations that kept their prices lower than others in Melbourne during dreaded fuel cycle price hikes.

As of Friday, savings of almost $20 were on offer for those filling up a standard car tank, simply by shopping around.

Of the servos, 7-Eleven, Caltex/Woolworths and BP were the best performers as were suburbs in the west.

It showed September was the worst month for price peaks with motorists being slapped with prices of $1.58 and $1.66 at the bowser — including on the school holidays where motorists were hit biggest hip-pocket hit at the fuel pump in a decade.

Global oil and wholesale prices and a weaker Australian dollar, making oil imports more expensive were being blamed for the fuel slug.

A MotorMouth spokeswoman said motorists should start looking for better prices now, with prices already lifting this weekend.

“When prices spike, there are often sites that consistently keep their prices below the competition,” the spokeswoman said.

“As of Friday morning, 12 per cent of petrol retailers in Melbourne were selling unleaded below $1.14. With some retailers selling fuel for as much as $1.43, it pays to shop around for the best price.”

As motorists continue to battle high prices, inspectors will conduct a fuel pump blitz to make sure motorists are getting their bang for their buck.

It comes after an increasing number of service stations were caught short-changing drivers at the bowser.

Economists say filling up the car was the single biggest weekly purchase for most families — and when they paid more for fuel cafes, restaurants and fast-food outlets copped the brunt as their was less cash to spend on discretionary or non-essential items.
