A MAJOR independent service station franchise could expand to Portland, after being granted a planning permit for a prominent site on the outskirts of the city.
Glenelg Shire Council has approved the application on behalf of Metro Petroleum to build a service station and convenience store at 609 Henty Hwy, currently the site of Mark Smith Motor Traders.
The service station would also be three doors from an existing Shell service station.
If built, it would become Portland’s seventh fuel outlet – joining one on the Henty Hwy, one on the ring road, one in Tyers St, two in Percy St and the under-construction OTR site in Percy St.
The permit was initially issued in September last year, but some amendments were required and these were submitted by the applicant last month.
“It is up to the applicant if and when they wish to proceed with this development,” a council spokeswoman said.
Plans for the site, seen by the Observer, indicate there will be three bowser lanes, as well as a separate truck area.
