24 hours a day, 7 days a week, Australian’s buy their favourite on the go and essential products at their favourite Convenience Store. The 2018 State of the Industry Report, the annual review of the Convenience Industry suggests that Australian’s drive some 2.37m merchandise transactions each and every day in Convenience Stores. That’s a lot of community connections.

This places Convenience stores as a key destination of choice for shoppers who choose their favourite location each day to refresh and refuel, to grab a quick snack and beverage or a hot pie, as well as to fill up their vehicle.

Convenience stores are intensely local businesses, offering an ever expanding range of products and services. Most of all, they sell convenience, allowing shoppers to quickly buy what they need and get on with their day. In rural and regional areas, convenience stores are often the only place in town to buy grocery items, fuel or other products or services.

One reason why Australian’s love their local Convenience store is because many share the neighbourhood’s interests – they are closely tied to the communities they serve. In many cases, they connect to shoppers on a personal level.

Starting from a deep desire to help, the #open7days campaign is about reminding and persuading shoppers that Convenience Stores are deeply connected to the community and not just by location. Many of the staff that serve shoppers, live locally too.

Hundreds of thousands of Australians are facing the prospect of not being able to pay their rent or mortgage, not being able to put food on the table, and if we lose these businesses now those jobs will be harder to get back later. We can’t let this happen.

#open7days is an Industry wide call to arms. I implore all Convenience Brands and Banners and Convenience Suppliers Australia wide to embrace the #open7days message. Use it in your social media, place posters up instore, print team member t-shirts or provide badges to be worn with their uniforms.

Our industry is facing a tough time ahead and taking leadership of communicating to our valuable team members and our communities messages like this, are timely for everyone. It gives the many, many people we employ hope and provides our communities even more reasons to keep supporting their favourite Convenience Store.
