FUEL prices at one of Cairns’ servos has risen slightly after setting a record low in years but remain below $1 per litre in line with a nearby competitor.

As of Saturday, unleaded prices at Woree’s United on Southgate Close and Liberty on Mulgrave Road are 98.9 cents per litre, with the latter offering 97.9 ULP91 on Thursday.

United’s E10, U95, U98 and diesel are 96.9, 111.9, 118.9 and 105.9, respectively.

Liberty meanwhile is offering E10, U98, diesel and premium diesel at 69.9, 122.9, 105.9 and 108.9, respectively.

Elsewhere in the Far North, the most expensive unleaded is 152.9cpl at Mt Carbine Roadhouse, about 130km northeast of Cairns.

Across the Cairns region, ULP prices range from 113–125cpl.

The latest RACQ monthly report in July shows the average unleaded price in Cairns was 119.1cpl and diesel was 120.3cpl.

In mid-August, Griffith University researchers found that motorists were driving down fuel prices.

As part of a two-year trial with the Queensland Government, retailers need to report their fuel prices within 30 minutes of a price change at the bowser to help motorists find the cheapest fuel prices in their area.

The university’s independent interim report found a small decline in average daily prices of unleaded, premium unleaded and E10 petrol in most regions of Southeast Queensland.

Lead author Associate Professor Parvinder Kler from Griffith Business School said they also found a significant increase in the spread of fuel prices.

“The use of fuel apps that have near-live price information could also help motorists in regional areas such as Townsville, Rockhampton, Bundaberg and Cairns save, given they can shop around,” Mr Kler said.

“Minimum prices for fuel and maximum prices have fallen allowing motorists to make savings at the bowser.

“We interpret this spread of prices to motorists actively seeking the lowest prices.”
