South East Queensland petrol prices have soared to record-breaking levels, with more increases on the cards as prices get closer to $2 a litre.

outh East Queensland petrol prices have soared to record-breaking levels, with some areas expecting to continue to increase.

Brisbane and the Gold Coast have all had record-breaking daily average petrol prices observed on Wednesday, beating records that were set in October.

The Gold Coast’s average ULP price was now 187.2cpl, up from 179.1cpl, while Brisbane had 186.3cpl.

RACQ spokesperson Renee Smith said 80 per cent of service stations across Greater Brisbane were charging 186cpl or more for ULP.

“A number of global factors are to blame for these staggering highs – with international supply and demand issues driving up oil prices and leading to high terminal gate price,” Ms Smith said.

“On top of this, the south east is in the expensive phase of the petrol price cycle.”

She said this has led motorists to be charged 44cpl more at the pump compared to the same time last year.

prices on the Sunshine Coast were expected to continue to climb into next week.

Ms Smith said it was “unlikely” prices will go this high again ahead of Christmas.
