Parcel delivery to Hubbed collection points reduces carrier’s carbon emissions by 50%

A 64 per cent increase in online shopping over 2020 and 2021 has a flow-on effect, increasing parcel delivery volume. This increase matches data from Hubbed, Australia’s leading agnostic parcel collection network, which experienced a 47 per cent increase in parcel deliveries through its network in the same two-year period.
This volume increase reveals the impact online shopping has not only on associated industries such as delivery and logistics, but the associated effect on the environment.
HUBBED’s alternative delivery options, reduce carrier costs due to more efficient deliveries, increase foot traffic for Out of Home (OOH) partners, and reduce last mile carbon emissions by almost 50 per cent.
“Increased parcel delivery volume has stretched the courier and post industry, but also impacted the environment,” said Hubbed CEO David McLean. “With parcel delivery volume increasing, there is an undeniable environmental impact. More parcels mean more couriers on the road making more stops,” said McLean.
Thankfully, Hubbed, which is certified by the Carbon Reduction Institute, reveals that for every kilometre of courier service using Hubbed’s Pick-Up and Drop-Off (PUDO) network, there is an estimated reduction in carbon emissions of .47kg tC002 – an approximate emission reduction of 50%. “Essentially, delivering more parcels at one location, instead of multiple individual stops as occurs with home delivery, helps reduce emissions,” said McLean.
Hubbed’s latest survey data reveals the growing demand for Out of Home (OOH) parcel delivery and collection, with 86 per cent of respondents wanting more retailers to deliver parcels to local collection points like those offered by Hubbed to help reduce carbon emissions. Over 70 per cent of those surveyed would prefer to pick-up parcels from collection points outside of regular Monday-Friday business hours.
Hubbed connects with most major eCommerce platforms including Shopify and Magento and courier services including Toll, TNT, UPS, Sendle, DHL, and Couriers Please. Hubbed’s agnostic solution allows retailers to use their preferred courier or delivery partner. When purchasing from Hubbed partners, online shoppers simply nominate their preferred Hubbed pick-up location, then collect it when they receive the notification. For returns, the process is just as simple; online shoppers use the HUBBED Returns portal to print their Returns label then select their most convenient HUBBED location to drop off their parcel, ready for collection.
