A man has been charged in Melbourne after a convenience store attendant was stabbed overnight.

Victoria Police were told a man entered the store, on the corner of Franklin and Elizabeth streets in the CBD, shortly after 11:30pm last night.

The shop attendant, a 29-year-old Oak Park man, confronted the offender after he allegedly attempted to steal an item, and a scuffle broke out between the pair.

Police allege the offender produced a knife and stabbed the shop attendant, who was taken to hospital in a serious but stable condition.
Police searched the area and located the man, who was arrested at an address on Elizabeth Street around 3.30am.

A 25-year-old Melbourne man has been charged with 12 offences including intentionally cause injury and recklessly cause injury.
