Hollywood star Dev Patel found himself among the witnesses to a stabbing at a petrol station in the Adelaide CBD on Monday night.

The Slumdog Millionaire actor was filmed by a 7News camera crew speaking with police after a woman allegedly stabbed a man in the chest at about 8.45pm.

Patel is understood to be spending time in South Australia with his girlfriend and Hotel Mumbai co-star Tilda Cobham-Hervey, who is from Adelaide.

Emergency services were called to Gouger Street on Monday night over reports a man and a woman were fighting on the street.

The pair continued fighting inside a service station where witnesses attempted to break up the scuffle.

The woman then allegedly stabbed the man in the chest.

A 32-year-old man was treated at the scene by paramedics before he was taken to Royal Adelaide Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Police arrested and charged a 34-year-old woman from Park Holme with aggravated assault causing harm.

She was refused bail and is due to appear in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Monday.

The couple are known to each other, and the attack was not random, South Australia Police said.

Patel and Cobham-Hervey began dating in 2016 after meeting on the set of Hotel Mumbai.

The Australian-American thriller is based on the 2008 terrorist attacks that took place over four days inside the grand Taj Mahal Palace Hotel.

The couple keep a relatively low-profile and had previously resided in the US city of Los Angeles.
