Petrol prices in Adelaide are among the highest in the state in the lead-up to Christmas. But the RAA says drivers should follow one simple tip to shield their wallets.
Adelaide drivers looking to fill up on petrol before Christmas should expect to pay more than usual, with the RAA advising motorists to hold out if they can.
The average price of unleaded in Adelaide is currently hovering at around $1.97/litre, according to the RAA phone app, but those travelling in the country can expect a cheaper refill.
The cheapest prices in Adelaide on Wednesday were $1.66.7/litre at Costco and $1.89.5/litre at multiple sites on Brighton Rd at Glenelg, Somerton Park and Brighton.
Most petrol stations on the Yorke and Eyre peninsulas are charging around $1.80/litre on average, while Mt Gambier recorded $1.74/litre.
On Wednesday, the lowest average prices across SA were $1.72 at Victor Harbor and Normanville.
Hawker in the state’s Mid North was $2.06/litre – the second most expensive spot behind Coober Pedy at $2.19/litre.
RAA fuel expert Mark Borlace said the price cycle will drop again between Christmas and New Year’s Day.
“Regional (unleaded) prices don’t fluctuate as much as our metropolitan prices,” Mr Borlace said.
“If you can hold out filling the whole tank until you’re out of the city, you should be able to make an easy saving at an otherwise expensive time of year.
“So if you can hold out on filling your whole tank until between Christmas and New Year, do it.”
Mr Borlace also urged holiday travellers to service their cars before departing.
“If you can’t, we recommend checking all your car basics including oil and water levels, and that your spare tyre is in place and inflated,” he said.
“While you’re at it, check that all your tyres are inflated to the correct pressure and have at least 1.6mm of tread.”
