Fog cannons deterred a man from taking anything from a Caltex petrol station in Timaru after he allegedly broke in early on Wednesday morning.

Senior Sergeant Richard Quested said a man broke into the petrol station on King St by climbing up a ladder and entering the store through the skylight at around 3am.

“Several attempts were made to break into the cigarettes cabinet but the fog cannon went off and the offender left,” Quested said.

“A police dog team tracked him to Shaw St [a few metres away from the station] and found some clothing and tools.”

Quested said the offender, who was unsuccessful in taking anything from the store, was not located and inquiries are under way to locate him.
