A retired couple is pleading for compassion from the government after a bureaucratic mess left them with no retirement nest egg and their local community with no petrol station.

Rathdowney is a scenic spot nestled in the mountain ranges inland from the Gold Coast.

Nestled in the mountain ranges inland from the Gold Coast was where Ian and Lyn Richter operated Rathdowney’s only petrol station for almost four decades.

But the servo has been shut down for more than three years – leaving the petrol pumps covered in weeds and fuel frozen at $1.10 per litre.

The couple had to shut the station down when it came time for their retirement.

They’d found a buyer to purchase the business along with what they thought was a lease for the tiny strip of land which belongs to the Department of Transport and Main Roads.
