Three people are in hospital after a runaway tanker filled with 22,000 litres of fuel ploughed into cars, power poles, and the front yard of a home in Melbourne’s southeast about 12.30pm on Tuesday.
The truck driver was heading outbound on the Princes Highway when he lost control of the tanker, causing it to veer across three lanes of oncoming traffic.
The tanker hit a car at that point, as well as two parked cars and two power poles, before finally coming to a stop in the front yard of a 91-year-old Carnegie man’s home.
The elderly man was not home at the time.
CCTV footage shows the moment the truck ploughed through the street, with pedestrians seen running for safety and falling over in their panic.
One car manages to reverse in time to avoid being hit by the huge tanker.
The truck driver, a 44-year-old Kilsyth man, and his passenger told police they did not remember what happened to cause the accident.
They were both taken to hospital for observation.
Emergency responders remained on the scene on Tuesday evening, trying to remove the truck containing a large amount of gas.
It is reported the truck came to rest over an underground gas main, further complicating its removal.
Police said the exact circumstances surrounding the collision are yet to established and an investigation is ongoing.
