Toll Group is set to introduce two hydrogen-powered prime movers on a dedicated steel freight route between Hastings and Geelong in the second half of 2026 which is supported by Viva Energy’s hydrogen refuelling infrastructure.
The trucks will operate on a 300-kilometre return journey transporting steel, with Viva Energy estimating the vehicles could prevent around 208 tonnes of CO₂ emissions each year compared with equivalent diesel-powered trucks. The reduction is based on avoiding the combustion of approximately 80,000 litres of diesel annually.
The announcement coincides with the first anniversary of Viva Energy’s Geelong hydrogen hub, which opened in 2025 as Australia’s first commercially scaled site to combine hydrogen refuelling with truck-sized ultra-fast EV charging alongside conventional fuels.
Located on Geelong’s Princes Highway, the hub has supplied more than six tonnes of renewable hydrogen in its first year of operation and has hosted more than 250 visitors from government, industry, regulatory bodies, educational institutions and customer organisations.
Viva Energy said the Toll deployment demonstrates the role hydrogen infrastructure can play in supporting the decarbonisation of heavy vehicle fleets, with the company continuing to invest in new energy solutions for the road transport sector.
