A type of premixed fuel found at hardware stores across Australia has been recalled over fears it could pose a serious risk. The STIHL MotoMix 1L and 4L tins were found to have a manufacturing defect that could leak fuel.

The tins were made by Perennial Packaging and the product was sold at places like Mitre 10, farm shops, STIHL stores, and other retailers dedicated to lawns, mowing, and hardware. The consumer watchdog said leaking fuel can affect human health.

“There is a risk of injury including irritation to skin, eyes from the leaked fuel, or it can cause drowsiness or dizziness,” the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) said.

“Risk of death if leaked fuel is swallowed and enters airways. Risk of fire if fuel leaks near a source of ignition.”

The tins were manufactured in Australia and the recall specifically is related to the 98 Octane fuel with 50:1 ratio mix with 2 stroke oil.

They were sold nationally between October 3 and December 5.

What should you do if you have this product?

The ACCC had very specific instructions on what to do if you have this in your home, shed, or garage.

Aussies have been urged to “immediately” stop using the affected tins if they are leaking.

“When handling the affected leaking tin, ensure you are wearing protective nitrile gloves, full length clothing, boots and glasses or goggles for eye protection,” the ACCC added.

People should place the tin in a well-ventilated area nowhere near any sources of ignition.

From there, you can check the tin to see if it was manufactured by Perennial Packaging, with the company’s name printed on the underside.

“Check the tin for any signs of unexplained fuel leakage, such as green fluid seeping from a seam, streaks of green fluid on the outside of the tin, or the presence of an odour characteristic of solvents from an unopened tin,” the consumer watchdog said.

“If you find any signs of leakage, or are concerned that your tin may be leaking, contact STIHL for assistance and details about a replacement tin or refund.”

You can contact STIHL either via email on enquiries@stihl.com.au or by phone on 1300 366 665.
