The Australian fuel and convenience industry is a vital part of our national infrastructure — one that quietly powers the daily lives of millions of Australians. From the businesses that wholesale and transport fuel to key businesses operating in key sectors like Mining and Agriculture to the more than 8000 petrol stations that service the needs of everyday Australians, our industry employs more than 65,000 hardworking Australians working in over 4,500 businesses.
Each year, the Australian Fuel & Convenience Awards (AFCA) seek to shine a spotlight on the outstanding contributions made by businesses and individuals across the industry. In 2025, we are once again proud to open nominations for these prestigious national awards — and we are calling on all fuel businesses in our industry (members and non-members alike) to put forward the businesses and people that make a real difference.
What are the Australian Fuel & Convenience Awards?
The AFCA program is designed to formally recognise business excellence within the Australian fuel and convenience sector. These awards seek to recognise organisations that quietly demonstrate exceptional leadership in compliance, workplace safety, innovation, and sustainability.
In 2025, a total of seven (7) national business awards will be presented, recognising excellence across a broad cross-section of our industry:
- Fuel Retailer (Small) – Retailers with less than 20 sites.
- Fuel Retailer (Large) – Retailers with more than 20 sites.
- Fuel Distributor (Small) – Distributor volume of up to 150ML per year
- Fuel Distributor (Large) – Distributor volume over 150ML per year.
- Equipment & Services Supplier (Fuel)
- Equipment & Services Supplier (Convenience)
- Convenience Distributor
These awards reflect the depth and diversity of our sector — from major retail operators to niche product suppliers — and provide a unique opportunity to recognise these businesses for the work they do, regardless of size and industry sub-sector.
A truly independent, merit-based judging process
All nominations are reviewed by an independent judging panel with experience in business, logistics and community engagement – and are wholly independent of the Australian Fuel Industry. Nominees are evaluated against four key criteria, each weighted to reflect its importance in driving excellence:
- Excellence in compliance (30%)
- Provision of a safe and healthy workplace (40%)
- Championing innovation (20%)
- Delivering sustainable outcomes (10%)
This robust and transparent scoring system ensures that winners represent the best of the best — organisations that not only operate effectively, but also demonstrate leadership, responsibility, and forward-thinking.
Recognising Community Contribution: The Marg Taylor Memorial Award
In addition to the business awards, AFCA will again present its most prestigious individual honour: the Marg Taylor Memorial Award for Community Spirit.
Named after the late Marg Taylor — a much-loved figure in the downstream fuel industry known for her tireless community advocacy — this award recognises fuel and convenience businesses that have gone above and beyond in serving the communities in which they operate.
Whether it is responding to natural disasters, supporting local charities, or being a dependable presence in remote and regional areas, this award celebrates the spirit of community service that defines the very best of our industry.
