From 15 December 2025, new Australian petrol standards come into force. Under the new standards all grades of petrol must have maximum of 10 parts per million (10ppm) sulfur. 95 Research Octane Number (RON) petrol will have a maximum of 35% aromatics. The change requires retailers be ready to answer questions from interested customers in addition to responding to increased compliance checks.
The Changes
Producers, importers, wholesalers and retailers of petrol must meet the new petrol standard by 15 December 2025.
This means that any fuel retailed on or after this date MUST meet the 10ppm standard.
New 10ppm standard fuel has been flowing through the network for some time, with refiners and importers moving to the new standard at different points through the year.
Retailers should confirm with their supplier that the fuel they are receiving is 10ppm new standard fuel.
Consideration should be made NOW to confirming the fuel received is to the new standard, as top up delivery approaches may mean that a retailer would need to ‘turn over’ the liquid stock several times before the ‘old standard’ fuel is sold through.
So leaving it to mid December 2025 is too late to make sure you are receiving the new standard stock from your supplier.
Increased Compliance Checks
From 15 December 2025, duel quality sampling will be undertaken to monitor compliance with the new standard across all points of the supply chain.
Retailers are reminded to keep all of their fuel delivery docket paperwork organised ready to provide to the department or to the National Measurement Institute, who are responsible for regulating fuel quality.
