Fuel retailers who believe they may not be able to comply with the new cash mandate obligations are being urged to apply for exemption from the cash acceptance mandate before June 30.
This includes, for example, businesses that have unstaffed sites that predominantly sell diesel but may sell a small amount of unleaded petrol, and businesses that may be staffed for say, 12 hours, and utilise an OPT the balance of the time.
The ACCC have advised that businesses that have applied for exemptions by June 30 will be considered to be compliant with the mandate, even though a determination may not have been granted.
Businesses that have not submitted an exemption application will be considered in breach of the cash acceptance mandate and may be subject to enforcement action.
The cash acceptance mandate requires that businesses with an annual turnover over $10 million annually must accept cash transactions up to $500 from 7am to 9pm every day. Unstaffed fuel sites that sell diesel only are automatically exempt from the mandate.
