The 2026 Census is occurring on Tuesday 11 August 2026, and service stations are being asked to help get the word out to travellers who are on the road on Census Night so that they can be counted.
Why the Census matters
The Census is the most comprehensive snapshot of the country and tells the story of how we are changing. The Census is the only data collection activity that provides information for the entire country, including for small geographic areas and small population groups.
Community groups, not-for-profit organisations, businesses and governments use Census data to make important decisions.
Census data informs planning for schools, health care, transport, infrastructure and business. It’s also used to help plan local services for individuals, families and communities.
How service stations can help
As essential services on the road, service stations are uniquely placed to communicate to those who are on the road on Census Night, either for work or pleasure.
Service stations are being asked to display poster and information materials onsite around the time of Census night on August 11, to ensure that all travellers are aware that they need to fill in the Census form, even if they are in transit and how to fill it out if they are travelling.
“The Census team has been actively engaging with the transportation industry, including trucking and freight association, rail and coach companies and airlines to ensure that all passengers are made aware of the requirement to accurately complete their forms to reflect exactly where they are on August 11 and appreciates the support of the service station network”.
